Out here in the West of the U.S., we call this weather phenomenon a "sun dog." I have no idea where such a name came from, but folklore has it that a sun dog means "rain tomorrow." Meteorology sources say that it is a special luminescence caused by sunshine through ice crystals above the clouds. Lovely sun dogs you have there, sir.
